Plan ahead. According to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), “Health insurance plans must provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment for the duration of breastfeeding. These services may be provided before and after birth.”  But in order to get a free insurance-covered breast pump, you will need a prescription from your doctor. It’s best to ask your doctor to write you a prescription for a breast pump long before your due date, although some insurance plans may allow you to get your pump only shortly before or even after the birth of your baby. And remember: in most cases, you can choose between several pump, even if your doctor writes a specific pump on your prescription. There are instances where some pump manufacturers “entice” doctors to prescribe a particular pump; but you still can choose an Ardo pump.

You can’t get your free insurance pump directly from the pump manufacturer. Breast pumps are “durable medical equipment” (DME), which means they can be dispensed only through a DME supplier authorized to bill your health insurance. The DME supplier is similar to a pharmacy:  your doctor writes a prescription, but you cannot get your medication directly from the drug manufacturer. Instead, you go to a pharmacy which hands or ships you the medication and bills your insurance company. Similarly, unless you pay for the breast pump yourself, the DME needs your prescription and insurance information before it can give or ship you your breast pump.  But unlike with medication, you typically have a choice for your breast pump. The type of breast pump often depends on the “generosity” of your insurance plan and whether a particular DME company carries the pump you want. Many national and regional DMEs carry Ardo breast pumps, so be sure to go to Ardo’s website to find out which DMEs offer Ardo breast pumps based on your insurance plan and the state you live in.

Why do you need an Ardo Calypso breast pump?
Our Ardo Calypso breast pump mimics your baby’s sucking pattern as it would be when your baby is breastfeeding at your breast. A breastfeed session begins with the baby making short, rapid sucks. This sucking pattern triggers a ‘letdown’ in which your milk is released from your breast. Similarly, the Ardo Calypso breast pump initially mimics these short, rapid sucks when you begin your pumping session. After you have achieved a letdown with your breast pump, you can change the settings to then mimic the long, slow, and rhythmic sucking patterns that your baby would have at your breast. When you have a pump that mimics your baby’s true suck, you will ultimately be able to pump more milk.
